Back to Pride

2020

Chokri Ben Chikha was invited by the Maastricht Theatre Academy to create a performance with some of the academy's students. For this project, they explored the rise and ideals of the “new right”. This resulted in the performance “Back to Pride ”, in which the students, in the style and aesthetics of contemporary internet culture, explore the boundaries of pride and shame regarding identity, culture and nationalism.

It is 2025. Five years after graduating, a group of young Dutch performers start their own YouTube channel: Back to Pride. They decide to radically distance themselves from progressive and postmodern arts and focus on the voice and gut feelings of the Dutch people. This is not surprising. Meanwhile, the Netherlands is under extreme right-wing rule, which has an influence on the intellectual climate. In their compelling video channel, the performers address social issues and explore how they can come to terms with collective traumas from the past and present.

This project was presented on December 15th 2020 at the Maastricht Theatre Academy.
