2017

What do we do with people who make extreme choices and thus place themselves outside society? How do we deal with people who are considered a danger to society? What if such people regret their actions and want to rejoin society? Do we give them a second chance or do we consign them to oblivion? What lessons can we learn from the SS past, with a view to the IS present?

After years of treading the boards, theatre company Action Zoo Humain is now venturing into the world of television. Forget the small talk, the conflict, the feigned interest. The unprecedented talk show format Together Through One Door flouts the ten commandments of civilised talk shows. The guests of the evening: the daughter of a collaborator and the mother of a Syrian fighter. Amnes(t)ie delves into both our collective past and the current precarious socio-political reality. What can we learn today from the years after the Second World War, a period in history when the re-education and healing of collaborators was a hot topic

With Amnes(t)ie, Action Zoo Humain raises numerous topical questions. Can the reintegration of traitors after WWII offer us guidance today for the return of radicalised IS fighters, especially now that the caliphate has crumbled? What place do we assign to perpetrators when we try to deal with those affected as appropriately and serenely as possible? Should we forget and forgive? What are the implications for the families and communities of collaborators and those who went to Syria, and what happens when the two sides come face to face? Together Through One Door advocates radical reconciliation.

This performance was selected for the Theatre Festival 2018 (Antwerp, Belgium), was shown at Theater aan Zee 2018 (Ostend, Belgium) and was shown at the Dutch Theatre Festival 2018 (Amsterdam, Netherlands).

The Truth Trilogy

Amnes(t)ie is the third part of The Truth Trilogy, a broader project by Action Zoo Humain about “truth”. Action Zoo Humain uses a number of conflicts, both domestic and international, to reflect on what “truth” is and what “truth” means (still) today. What “truths” still exist today? Who tells and determines that “truth”? What rational or emotional arguments are put forward to arrive at that “truth”? And what reality does a particular “truth discourse” construct?
