de leeuw van vlaanderen
THE LION OF FLANDERS
2003
The family trilogy De Leeuw van Vlaanderen - Onze Lieve Vrouw van Vlaanderen - Broeders van Liefde starts from the autobiographical material from the childhood of Chokri and Zouzou Ben Chikha.
The first part, De Leeuw van Vlaanderen, centers on the flawed relationship between a son raised in Flanders and his Tunisian father. The source of inspiration is Hendrik Conscience's novel “De Leeuw van Vlaanderen”. This performance contains a triple battle: the battle between the Flemish and the French, as written down in Hendrik Conscience's novel, the battle between Chokri's father and the Flemish and the personal battle between Chokri and his father Habib.
The performance explores the tension between Flemish chant, Arabic sounds and movements. A monologue blends into a pop concert. The audience glances into the living room of a Tunisian family that also listens to Will Tura.
'De Leeuw van Vlaanderen' is a particularly intense hour of musical theatre, without boredom or weak moments, zapping between Art and popular, between horror and astonishment, between protest and resignation. And did we tell you that the new Lion of Flanders wears long dreadlocks?"
